As we talked about in class, many prominent African American celebrities, Cosby, Sharpton, Oprah, and Whoopi included, were peeved with Dave Chappelle's portrayal of the black community. Here is the site that details the conspiracy theory: The Chappelle Theory, I'm sure there are more, but once you start reading this one, it's hard to stop.
Also, the particular skit we discussed, (with Clayton Bigsby, white power) is said to be the one that really set Cosby off. Here it is in case you haven't seen it.
I'm interested to know if people really think that this comedy skit really "sets race relations back 50 years", as Cosby said.

People who don't think Dave Chapelle is funny must be damn near dead. He is absolutely hilarious, and he discusses serious issues in a comical way. In my opinion, he does not attempt to offend people so much as he tries to show people how ridulous we all can be. Chapelle's goal is similar to that of Mel Brooks' in "Blazing Saddles." If people take offense to Chapelle's material, they should change the channel. I do not believe in taking away a person's right to free speech, no matter how crude their message.
I didn't get to view the video b/f it was deleted from YouTube but if it was anything like any of the other Dave Chapelle material, I didn't need to see it to know that it is very stereotypical and casts a very negative light on black Americans.
The main reason why I don't like Dave Chapelle's comedy is because he makes jokes to a primarily white audience at the expense of black people. This kind of qualifies him to be a "sellout" because the image of blacks that he perpetuates is so damaging due to his high visibility.
So areas in which there are not a lot of black people, a television can do a lot to shape your perspective of what a black person is like.
It is frustrating to me to see comments like Anne's that, "People who don't think Dave Chapelle is funny must be damn near dead. He is absolutely hilarious, and he discusses serious issues in a comical way. " His jokes do not offer a solution to the "serious" issue he talks about like drugs, prostitution, ignorance on how to manage $, it just points a finger at the victims (mostly black people in his skits) and laughs.
I don't believe in taking away a person's freedom of speech either but I think celebrities like Chapelle should be more socially responsible.
Oh my god Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey killed Tupac! Oprah sends direct messages to Chapelle through his TV set! Both Oprah and Sharpton go to Chapelle's house to terrorize him!
It's a hoax:

Oh, I don't know, I think that I am on the fence somewhat with this one and I know that the fence is not a good place to be. Dave seems ok. He does give food for thought, but I guess Bill said that his plate was overflowing. This statement "this pushes Blacks back 50 years." It hurts. Blacks had, is having, and will have for so time to come those things in society that pushes that segment of people back. Even if Blacks are not pushed back, they are placed in check so that their movement is scrutinized. There was a show on TV called the 30'ist funny shows and Cris Rock had the numder one slot. He talked in these very terms, on a chart he said that Oprah with her TV show, magazine, and popularity put Black people forward let's say ten years, he than said OJ with his newfound fame has put Black people back 20 years and on and on, he was using a horse or something to show a galloping movement, the audience was dying, it was hilarious. This looks similar to Agee's style.
